1. Tree of Life

Malick's autobiography contrasted with the creation of the universe, gorgeous, slow like a roast.

2. Beginners

A movie about acceptance, fear, and the difference between being alone and lonely; probably the film that most personally affected me and my year.

3. Hugo

Scorsese did a kids movie thats really a love letter to film, I'm not sure what else I need to say.

4. Carnage

Two couples meet to discuss a fight between their children, the entire movie takes place in one room, yet its all about the nature of the world and the dismalness that occurs when we impede with our false authority and sense of self.

5. Bridesmaids

Women can be funny too - Tina Fey

6. Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy

The years most anticipated thriller lives up to the suspense the trailer proclaimed, a study on loyalty. It's the British 'Departed,' their sense of order measured by our messiness.

7. Certified Copy

Many masters of film have said that the very definition of good cinema is a man and a woman talking, 'Certified Copy' is layers of this very theme....a rabbit hole that travels from casuality to family..showing the beauty and effort of care as well as the brutality of distance.

8. A Separation

Most emotionally gripping movie of the year, balances the social structure of a tormented land by placing a microscope on the torment of the people inside.

9. Marth Marcy May Marlene

I called this the flop of the year quality wise, then I saw it, nothing like what I was expecting. Thrilling and minimal, E olsen's performance is the reason it made the list.

10. Melancholia/Final Destination 5 (yes I know, right?)

A worn out franchise horror flick (the best final destination of them all), and a pre-apocalyptic art film address "the end" in respective fashions.

In reading a conversation between (Johnathan) Franzen and (Alice) Sebold mentioned in the New York Times, she mentioned "getting down in the pit and loving someone," to which Franzen describes as " We like the mirror and the mirror likes us. To friend a person is merely to include the person in our private hall of flattering mirrors.............She has in mind the dirt that love inevitably splatters on the mirror of our self-regard." I used to pray for clean slates, the falsified amygdala inside the limbic system that is my mystery.

Going back to America's greatest living novelist:

"The simple fact of the matter is that trying to be perfectly likable is incompatible with loving relationships. Preparation is fallacy. Risk is everything. Much like the depth beyond the singles of your grandparents music collection, memory is the scapegoat expediting present criticism. Hell, even drake wisdom is valid: You never see it coming, only see it go away. Being present is perhaps the hardest lesson I've ever learned. I've tried to pass it on but I think it has to click on their own.

Spaz Playlist: Love via Waves

so, this started off as just an electro-soul playlist, but I was wandering off in the depths of thought one night...and around the 12th song added to the playlist, I realized that love can be represented through pretty much any form of expression...its also a basic reaction, so makes sense to do on my first playlist of this type. It begins with acknowledge, ends with a blissful doze...its basically a sexual expression bouncing between genre's.

p.s. Keep in mind, subject matter isn't to be consistent when discussing love because love is not defined by romance but my movement.

Persuasive Speech: School Lunch Change in America

Introduction:

I. Irony: incongruity between the actual result of a sequence of events and the normal or expected result. Meet America, one of the unhealthiest countries in the world. Meet America, one of the countries most obsessed with healthy eating. This is what Michael Pollan, the Hercules of modern food philosophy and western diet, calls the American Dilemma.

II. On this lovely Wednesday we will take a look at the state of nutrition in the American school system.

III. The first lady, Mrs. Michelle Obama, from the white house website (June 17th 2009), announced at the opening of the white house garden the unacceptable conditions of over one-third of our students being obese. This has many negative outcomes on our society.

IV. First we will take a look at the problem with school nutrition itself, then its causes in our society, and finally solutions and how we can help solve this crisis.

Body:

Transition #1: First we are going to take a look the increasingly grotesque conditions of our public lunch system for schoolchildren.

I. Problems

A.

According to USA Today (December 9th 2009), even the standards of fast food (a problem itself) are currently higher than the standards applied to school lunch nutrition. The major problem in the United States with school nutrition is a lack of availability in funding and The Children Nutrition Act’s out of date standards. The United States has a policy that states that the Children Nutrition Act can only be revised every five years. Quoting the Time Magazine article “The War over America’s Lunch,” April 26th, 2010 the country is expected to “serve wholesome meals at fast-food prices. And not just that: kids have to like them.”

B.

All over the map at every level there is a need for reconstruction of nutrition in schools. From the United States Department of Agriculture, since the National School Lunch program was started in 1946, over 219 billion lunches have been served throughout the nation. The majority of these meals have been considered unsatisfactory by the general public. The meat approved for school lunches, that would be disapproved for fast food eateries, is served to approximately thirty one million students This for some students is the only meal they receive consistently on a daily basis. For example, NPR’s health blog, our kids are served food that KFC has rejected for not meeting quality needs. This is company whose newest selling point is eating bacon and cheese between two pieces of chicken.

C. (Harms: Direct and Indirect)

1. Close to 30%, according to the Columbus Family Health Examiner, of students in America do not meet the requirements necessary for them to join the military. It’s increasing at such a rate that the military and government has now deemed it a national threat. High level officers in the military have testified their complaints and wishes for schools to take harmful foods out of the school diets and vending machines.

2. Not eating proper meals affects student’s grades. These students are the future of every industry that competes in an rapid international world. A personal example of this is my own connection between eating at school and my grades. When I was in junior high I ate school lunches for a while with a steady decrease of grades. The problem was I could feel my body unfocused and unsettled after meals. Lacking the nutrients needed to maximize my potential, I saw my grades drastically change. Only once I began taking my own lunches again did I feel any type of energy return to my schoolwork.

3. The health of our families and citizens will continuously decrease if these trends continue. Imagine the limited opportunities that many of us already receive decreased more because our education system respects corporate benefits more than the backbone of the country, citizens.

4. Providing cheap and easy lunches to school systems are created by companies with horrible quality standards. Once programs created to benefit us are used as political tools we lose a strain of democracy in which we the people are supposed to be in charge of our health and well-being.
Transition #2: We have the right to fight our American right to well being, let’s look at the causes of this travesty.

II. Causes

A. The United States government: Here in America, especially with recent budget cuts and economic failures, it is increasingly tough to give attention to the school food programs in the country. As more people fall in our class system, the decision to focus on what we eat becomes less important in the school system.

B. Corporations own most of the market and media that serves and sells foods to the government. The relationship between corporations in America and the government has grown in most industries and has become inseparable. Most lunches are shipped to schools where they are reheated (like TV Dinners) instead of made at the schools. Many chools hire, according to Fed Up with Lunch (May 27th, 2010), food service management companies. Companies like Aramark, Sodhexo, and Chartwells promise to better conditions but move slowly due to the profits they currently receive. The USDA makes money off of lunch, the only part of the school day where they have any control, the choice between profit and health was an easy one. They chose money.

C. The greatest harm here could very well be ourselves. Not us as people, but our American ideology. American ideology is stubborn; we believe that no solutions other than our own are logical. Rush Limbaugh, as reported by the Food and Research Action Center, has said that needy kids should just eat fast food or go dumpster diving in the summer. This attitude isn’t as uncommon as we think. In America we worry about which foods to eat instead of the amount of food that we’re eating. One of the basic principles of American Political Culture is individualism. A belief that every person is in charge of their own fate which leaves us less than charitable on many occasions. Parents for instance are influences for children’s decisions and should be examples. Parents should be activist for their children’s health but have also become occupied with provision for the family monetarily. It is impossible for many parents to do both on their own.

Transition #3: After all, this is our problem; here are some possible solutions for this serious hindrance to our futures.

III. Solutions

A. Ann Cooper, the executive chef of Berkeley public schools, who in The New Yorker (September 4th 2006) called the USDA “a marketing arm for agribusiness,” suggest that we implement France’s public school lunch program. With government subsidies this would be the plan that most fits with American schools. Time Magazine, Feburary 3rd 2010, discusses how the French school system teaches children’s the proper choices of eating very early on. Most importantly, the French believe in the importance of school’s progress, they heavily fund food programs in schools.

B. Contact your government officials, Sign petitions; with large numbers these have a major impact on how fast officials act. Jamie Oliver, leader of a food revolution dedicated to changing school’s approach to food, has a petition on jamieoliver.com with over half a million signatures to submit to government officials. This year is the year where congress revisits the school lunch programs so it is very important to make our voices heard.

C. Be a good influence for children around you. Become active in the community that you live in. I have brought with me a pamphlet of information of places where you can become more education on the needs and happenings of school nutrition.

D. Volunteer in some of the school nutritional programs. Donate to many foundations available. Some of these foundations include One Tray, California Food Policy Advocates, and Healthy Schools Campaign.

Conclusion:

I. We have discussed the problem with our school system’s food programs, the causes of these programs failures, and ways to resolve the issue.

II. We value equal opportunity, lets provide that to this and future generations through our actions and belief in their ability.

III. When looking at the people making the decisions about our children’s eating just think of how school lunches may have made them think that way. Ironic isn’t it?

Kenneth Bancroft Clark: A Historical Profile

Thesis Statement

Throughout the course of history, significance has come from not only people who are known all across the world, but on a continuous wave with others who devote themselves to a cause and accomplish goals that change the way people interact with one another. The life and opportunities that Dr. Kenneth B. Clark worked for through a combination of passionate social research and consistent belief in unity and teamwork have impacted the United States and the world even until this day. With the intensity of service that Dr. Clark showcased, the integration of schools in America, the possibilities and opportunities (not only for Black children but all children) opened through being able to study at schools with better materials, and the implementation of social sciences into the influence of law were all brought to realization.

Biological Sketch

Kenneth Bancroft Clark was born, to Jamaican (at least by birth) parents, in the Canal Zone of Panama. He was born in 1914 and has a sister, Beulah, whom with his mother relocated to New York City when they were both very young. Being in New York City, Clark was raised in his younger years in neighborhoods and schools that were made up of mostly White Americans but as he began to age his schools started to become majority black [1]. This balance between the separations of the groups would be instrumental in his belief that all races of children should be part of an inclusive educational system. As an excelling student, due to the lack of black inclusion in University level schooling, he opted for Howard University instead of going after the more Ivy League programs. While at Howard it is important to note that Clark’s ideology toward racial equality and unity flourished due to many people surrounding him who shared in similar ideas. From Francis Cecil Sumner (a psychologist, who was his biggest influence)[2] to the many attorneys who would go on to influence the civil rights movement[3]. Once graduated, but still attending Howard as a graduate student, Clark met Mamie Phipps. Kenneth Clark married Mamie in 1937, much to the concern of her parents.

After Mamie graduated and took a job in Washington D.C., they began to do research together dealing with subjects for which they’d become known. Lawyers like Thurgood Marshall worked on cases that aimed to fight segregation, enlisting social researcher’s like Mamie (and Kenneth by association) Clark to help. Based on his wife’s studies, Clark too began to become involved in the studies that would eventually develop into the infamous doll tests. Clark received his education after Howard University at Columbia University, along with his wife, in the studies of social sciences. The poignancy of Kenneth B. Clark’s time at Columbia was the dichotomy of battles or “experimentation [4]” at Columbia University at the time. The white faculty and scientists who were studying or working at Columbia held the belief that Clark wouldn’t be able to keep up with the others attending, let alone make a name for himself and excel. Not only did Clark surprise the staff with his abilities, he paved the way for Mamie to enter the school while carrying their child. Similarly to the completion of Kenneth Clark’s doctoral studies in 1940, The Clark’s next child, Hilton (the first was named Kate) came to life the year of completion of Mamie’s doctoral studies. After graduation, Kenneth became the first black professor at the City College of New York [5]. He continued to assist his wife in her studies of racial identification (specifically amongst young black children). Along with Mamie, Kenneth concluded that the image that black children learned very young was one that lacked any positivity. This early research, led to Kenneth Clark’s participation in the infamous Brown v. Board of Education case. The NAACP usage of Dr. Clark goes beyond just scientific research extending to his testimony stating the affects that segregation has to further the negative images that black children have of themselves. The testimony was an integral part in the successful campaign to desegregate schools with the passing of the Brown v. Board of Education case. After this case Clark’s place in the Civil Rights movement was set, as he continued devotedly to fight for integration in schools nationally as well as in intellectual communities. The Clark’s opened up the Northside Center for Child Development, as well as helping to create the Metropolitan Applied Research Center [6]. Kenneth Clark served as a visiting professor at many of the top universities in the country including Harvard and UC Berkeley. In 1971, he served as the president of the American Psychological Association, the first African American to do so. He retired from working in the academic field in 1975. Within a decade later his wife Mamie, passed, Clark continued to pursue the cause of integration for the rest of his life. In 2005, Kenneth Clark died, remembered by many but not enough.

Kenneth B. Clark’s major contribution to the people of the United States and abroad comes in the form of his work on the integration of schools in the United States of America. Dr. Clark and Mamie’s work with the doll tests of the 1940’s shined a lot of light on a subject that had otherwise before been swept under a rug and not given much respect. Without the evidence that segregation had a psychological effect on children of African American heritage as well as children who were not, the case would not have passed unanimously through the convincing of Chief Justice Earl Warren. The court ruling that segregation in schools was unconstitutional was a sparking point for the desegregation of other parts of American society. The desegregations of schools was not an immediate action, although it was enforced by the courts. This slow start just further highlighted the racial tension of the country. This racial tension existing in the country for decades beforehand is a direct connection to the mental problems that come with segregation. If one person is separated from another, and the person see’s their opposite as the power system, naturally they will feel a sense of inferiority.

Another major contribution crucial in Dr. Kenneth B Clark’s legacy is the abundance of opportunities that he left behind him. It would be easy to pinpoint the desegregation of the educational system as the source of opportunity that Clark provided but this is not a complete perspective. The previous years to his involvement with the Brown v. Board of Education case, during all of his studies and his work post-Brown case in the academic fields achieving status never before seen by African American intellectuals. His studies at Columbia opened the doors for the onrush of students who would begin to study in higher level programs, especially in Ivy League schools. The popular belief in the highest ranking schools and programs was the Black Americans could not operate at similar paces intellectually as other races could. They would use this as an excuse to not accept students, believing that it would be unfair to the black students as well as other students who could participate at a level of the program. Once he complete his work as a student, Clark embarked into opening doors in leadership positions. He was the first African American professor at the City College of New York and traveled throughout America teaching at other schools. He also served as the first black president of the American Psychological Association, increasing the possibilities of black students pursuing the career by example [7].

Dr. Kenneth Clark’s focus and love was the social sciences, a third major contribution that currently affects the majority of law related cases today is the way that he and the NAACP incorporated the scientific research into strategy. In today’s law system, using scientific evidence from the social sciences may be considered commonplace but it was virtually unheard of at the time of the Brown v. Board of Education case. Not only did the usage of the doll tests and psychological research add another layer to that specific case (it may’ve been the turning point in Chief Justice Earl Warren’s decision) but it had a major historical impact on the future of the law outside of class or racial boundaries that the Brown v. Board of Education case dealt [8]. Once the social sciences were taken serious as evidence rather than as show, the respect of social scientist in the eyes of lawmakers grew.

All three of these major contributions tie into each other and common thread throughout his life of unity and loyalty to people and causes. Kenneth, and his wife Mamie, realized that they would not be able to help progression of the possibilities of Black Americans without taking tasks into their own hands and opening organizations that were dedicated to those same factors that made Dr. Clark brilliant and likeable in many communities [9].

Significance

The significance of desegregating schools can be described in many different terms but is most evident in the definition of America. The United States of America represents itself as a type of melting pot where people mix and operate with one another without losing their own distinctive cultures and family traits. If something as integral as the education system cannot function with all of its pieces as a whole, the outlook of the world will be that the United States does not truly stand behind its morals. More directly, it has a major effect on African American children and parents all over the nation. The children now have the ability to study at schools where materials are updated more regularly and that give them a better chance in the world. Desegregation of schools is important because it marked one of the first major victories of the Civil Rights movement. Kenneth Clark’s participation in the case and the final verdict shows that desegregation had an immediate impact; this is significant because it made citizens face the realities of their past fears and the obligations of the future.

The opportunities that Dr. Clark opened up for the public, specifically Black Americans, have had a never ending significance to the state of the nation. With Black American’s open to a whole host of new possibilities it increases the self-confidence of each generation’s belief in their ability to accomplish their dreams. The opportunities also promised a path for economic development in the black community. This would play a major part in how much power Black Americans in the country in upcoming generations. To gain power that Black Americans could achieve without losing what they believed to be their cultural identity would lead to more opportunities for Black Americans to go after in the future. Dr. Clark’s work with the Northside Center for Child Development and the Harlem Youth which specialized specifically in the development of young black people to succeed in the world.

Social sciences and the work that Kenneth Clark dealt in within the sciences are significant due to the way we view facts. Taking material and proving a conclusion through the usage of the people and environment around them. This helped to pass some of the most crucial cases in history. This strategy used in Brown v. Board of Education showed the importance of the study of people. What better way to persuade people what is right or wrong, than to study, analyze, and attempt to understand the people who are involved? The social sciences studied the self-image of black and white children, listing the differences in confidence between the two. Once this material has been studied it is then possible to find solutions to the problems. This is exactly why his testimony and research in the Brown v Board of Education case was so effective [10]. It was a solution to a crippling problem in the United States of America.

Conclusion

Dr. Kenneth B. Clark was a fellow who worked closely with those who he believed in. Whether it was the NAACP during the Brown v. Board of Education case or his psychological doll tests completed with his wife Mamie Clark. He had a way of convincing people of making grand decisions that would be impactful not only immediately but in the future as well. His works as well as the way he lived his life is evidence enough of the power of unity and integration’s possibility in America. When remembering Clark, think about the organizations and the laws he helped succeed rather than his individual achievements.

The crucial component to the success of this song is that none of the artists involved stray from what they're known for: Redman with the comedy (poking fun at autotune), Method Man's no nonsense patient ride of the beat, Pimp C's spirit lives on in the hook (always a good song sign), and Bun B up last rapping with his authoritarian sense of self.

And what he know has become the possibly (or tied with Trap Goin Ham) harrowing rap song of the year. The music is a tick and a slow piano tap....its slow, the bass grumbles, you're there with him as his day goes from start to finish. As the song grows you can sense something isn't right, but by the end of the song the result isn't shocking at all...well because that's life yeah? Haunting.

I have two Gucci song's, this and his ft. on Big Boi's Shine Blockas ( Gucci - "They Put Gucci In a Cell, Then Madea went to jail...I make music, I make movies, I need Tyler Perry Sales"), with that said...'Kush Is My Cologne' is a smoker's anthem (I don't smoke, but I know). Each person on the song plays a very intricate part in the mentality of a smoker who smokes enough that kush would be their cologne. Bun B don't give a fuck, he's a man who does what he wants, he's the release, the rebelion released with every puff. Gucci is the excuse, everyone has a "reason" they smoke it "makes him more intelligent," it "is his cologne." He breathes it and thinks it. E-40 is the exaggeration, ever been so high you try to figure out other peoples thoughts and actions even if they haven't done anything yet? Yeah thats him, plotting on some random chick, singing to himself on exploits that have not even occurred yet. Devin is the high. Once you're high...you don't really care about any of this stuff anymore? Life is good. "I deserve it"..."It's all worth it" What makes the track so compelling is that it never stops...each verse is in an out, the chorus just announcing the kush is "stupid strong"...the poof..the high is gone.

Tahiry, miss popular, relationship flopped, record label disrespect, getting thugged out by Raekwon live on the internet, media rumors and criticism of his new lady...it's been an interesting 09 to say the least. He lets it all out here, voice extra raspy (he's on tour) and knocking down each topic one by one. From his impartial attitude on his successes and failures (listen to almost depressed way he lists his friend's projects at the beginning) to the laughter of release at the end, sometimes we just gotta say what's on our mind.

Similarly, Slim Thug's best track this year was also used as a form of release. The inspiration of HipHop Saved My Life by Lupe is back and addressing those who aint have his back during his recession from H-town movement fame to little heard from "wonder." The song brews slow, like the best Texas songs do, including the best usage of guitar to evoke emotion this year, J-Dawg's reflections, and Z-Ro's paranoia mixing to create a formula of a cold-hearted anthem, increasingly relevant in these times of crisis where we find out who our true friends are.

These two terms are polar opposites, not escaping from problems, but escaping problems as Saukrates notes "it's never been so fun." And..well I wish I knew Natalie Portman too lol.

Fashawn, heavily influenced by Nas and his home Central California, opts to take a different route with his "God" track, detailing an experience he had along his path to enlightenment instead of rapping a prayer he raps an explanation. Exile's beat is sweet, gentle, subtle but as complex as any other Exile beat. By the end of the song Fashawn knows and shows us that he's on a mission, knighted by his father.

Ok...if you don't know G-Side, you missed the rawest album of the year, as someone who has followed their journey to success for quite some time, from the way they release "party" songs capturing an audience then dropping bombs on em with tracks like "Whose Hood" or "So Wonderful"...but more on this cd later. Rising Sun uses the G Slim Thug's positive hustle wordage to promote anti-hustling, encouraging the legit road to glory. ST 2Lettaz lyrical as always using "You not a W-2 boy" as a diss, Clova slanging on the beat recalling their "flippin chickens call it Zaxbys," and guest star Kristmas (who steals the song) bragging about showing off his tax forms. All of this while Block Beattaz creates an ocean out of piano keys and cuts. The game has changed. Finally.

Remember when Game was supposed to be the savior of the West Coast? THIS is why. Quite possibly the only song Game has made without directly name dropping lol. He doesn't do anything spectacular here, just a song about growing up over Kanye's most innocent and charming beat since his pre-808/heartbreak era. If the R.E.D. Album continues on this path, The Game will be back in full force. (Sidenote: *dead* @ LL and Luke lines)

Wale is the most overrated of the new rappers in my opinion, I love the DC style, and I can't deny the beauty of this song. Sometimes rappers should just rap, no topic...just rap. K'naan murdered this song, but Wale wasn't short on what he'd call "Rosanne Bars" Produced by the brilliant Dave Sitek (Tv on the radio...get it..the song title..wordplay?) but not his best work.

In trying to think of my favorite Freddie Gibbs song (if you want to invalidate number 52, "Murder On My Mind" by Gibbs is then on here), I realized my favorite Freddie appearance was on a song other than his own, just like their prior collaboration (see above "Womb 2 the Tomb") both rappers go turkey, bitch slapping the beat around as it rattles in the background (both artists also steal the song on the others song). They learned the game long time ago. A collab mixtape in 2010..please?

J Cole had a good year, he signed with Hova, he maintained on songs with JayZ-Jay Elect- Talib-Mos Def-and Wale, he got up.

Every other list has Shine Blockas, a superior single featuring Gucci Mane that's all about haters and success, but to me the two songs don't even compare. The shortest too short (or maybe anyone) guest verse ever, George Clinton is always golden with Outkast members, and Big Boi's "dope" song has many more messages than smoking. It's a funky, welcome, re-introduction to the long awaited SirLucious album from Big Boi.

Uh...what the hell? lol...thats what this song is...not one breath wasted, fast paced, funnel into the minds of the man who created the purposely "off" flow, and the DJ who proves year after year he hasn't lost a step. Things repeat in a trance state, almost like a We The West propaganda piece.

The video shot low budget, the lyrics don't brag, its told from the perspective of male, female, ex con, the people. Dont we all hate "jobs"???

In the first year of Barack Obama's presidency, we could all embrace a little history...and a little thought.

Dissecting Two as One

A caterpillar and a butterfly share one similarity outside of being the same animal, the complexity of their colors. I’m a butterfly, an understatement in a past that was severely dependent on social status as value. As with most situations I’ve lived through or descriptions I’ve found myself abiding to, I learned something important about operating life. In this instance I learned as Harville Hendrix, author of “Getting the Love You Want” quotes Walt Whitman in the acknowledgments of his book as saying that “I contain multitudes.” Stealthily I’ve learned this myself in the last few months I’ve embarked on my relationship with my girlfriend. It’s been three months plus since the word love began floating around

Connection, a basic C term in comparison to the five C’s of Marital Success (Communication, Commitment, Caring, Compliments, and Creativity) learned in lecture conducted by Lynn is the initial C term that made this relationship official. If we’re happy we’re happy no? We share a term 90, representative of the 90 percent of similarities we share (and discover on happenstance, never in search). I think this natural (chemical? spiritual?) connection is the basis of the bones in our relationship. Bones though, are not muscles. Our muscles provide strength and we use strength to move. As I write this, I was reminded that one late night I said the 10 percent makes us what we are. Our opposites are our strengths, not many, one’s that bind not strain. One strength of mine is I’m extremely patient, she can be impatient when a clear understanding doesn’t await upon entry of the situation. I have the flaw of being free-spirited (the best description of this is the main character in my favorite book “The Verificationist” by Donald Antrim who tends to lift and float forming his perception of life) to a fault leading to more than a few occasions when I’ve dug a hole where only such a responsible hand as hers can help me up. According to the ‘Becoming Aware’ text book accepting a person is a major factor in developing a close relationship. Our differences are accepted, as differences different than flaws, and this sparks my personal definition of commitment (by far the most difficult of Robert Sternberg’s definition of Consummate Love [the ideal form of love in his Triangular Model of Love] for both of us to achieve). Commitment is not only accepting yourself and your partner, but the willingness to be a part of their differences as loyally as you are when dealing with their similarities. The text book describes commitment as a point between the two when “a couple agrees to depend on each other for the satisfaction of important needs.” In our relationship, I have learned you must also remember the reflection of this which is to be independent enough of self to allow your partner to supply satisfaction to those needs. Both the text book and “Getting The Love You Want” as well as class lectures identify the philosophy that we choose our mates based on their ability to strengthen our offspring. This would also be an important reason to embrace our differences within one another.

I’m not a believer that hardship makes people stronger, but I do think that too much of certain things can make them weaker. Strong people can be distracted by things that come too easy. Maintaining a career nowadays is extraordinarily complicated, even if you’re just doing your work and showing up for required occasions. You can waste an amazing amount of energy, time and goodwill by chasing after stuff that’s not worth chasing after. Really wise artists know how to make dramatic appearances and how to make dramatic disappearances. – Robert Storr

Listening is part of communication, but I never really understood the difference between listening and hearing until a few years ago. To hear is simply to receive the sound, to listen requires attention. Both of us being psych majors, passionate about the field, listening has been one of the more effortless of tasks in our relationship. “Getting the Love You Want” strongly suggests an activity called ‘The Couple’s Dialogue,’ the goal of this being to to “listen actively” and “understand and validate the point” of your partner’s views. This being natural between the two of us has solved every conflict of importance in the past (as well as compromise, a sign of maturity in a relationship). The text book describes listening fully with the word “attentive” bonding with what I learned before but also (documented as its highest form of listening) with the word “empathetic,” a strength we both share as well. Of course, there are times when listening and communication seems short. She avoids certain topics to keep joyous moods intact and I prefer to hold things in. These are gender differences in communication. I become avoidant, and in my personal situations seek to solve them as quickly as possible (one positive is that unlike most males I do not aim for solutions immediately when a woman wants me to listen, something I learned from being raised by women) where as she takes emotion into consideration before and during speech. The text book describes listening as the most important part of communication. Listening is the key to reality and dreams within our relationship.

Reality (reality in love) is the stage that you transform into once a relationship develops past initial infatuation. At the beginning of most relationships there is a time where the two partners in the couple feel a heightened sense of relativity to one another. In class Lynn discussed this phenomenon as being “OCD on cocaine” via the “chemistry of love.” I find that we enjoy the comfort of reality more. Just being comfortable with ourselves and one another is an ever growing process. According to the text book you grow into love. Dr. Hendrix states that the mate you choose has been shaping since you were born. Your “imago” is represented by those who shaped you, people who had a major influence on your being, conforming your search to a combination of someone who somewhat matches the traits of those influences as well as traits of repressed feelings and events. Our mates are most likely based on those who took the best care of us or those who we believed should’ve taken care of us to recreate that connection in ourselves. Our reality is that there will be continual conflict. Conflict leads to something more, as with other things in life (such as justice or equality) overcoming the conflict not the conflict itself is the source of strength.

Love is much like citrus. It’s sweet and strong and seasons life well but stings in open wounds. My girlfriend has had a troubled relationship with her father, one that has led to ‘relationship patterns’ in past relationships. She’s done a wonderful job not only being aware of the situation but communicating it to me and continually doing grief work dealing with that subject. Those are all steps suggested in class from Julie Bowden for breaking patterns in relationship. I have a sexual pattern in which my parents were extremely open sexually, and I’ve repeated it in every relationship (including my current one) I’ve ever been in. This has proved to not be a problem. Luckily there are no relationship patterns that cause a major rift in the relationship.

Being open and accepting on love is a 180 from being open and accepting of self. This involves letting someone into even the deepest parts of you. To be able to be this open you need emotional intelligence. The text book describes emotional intelligence as the ability to acknowledge, control, and express your emotions. Also included in emotional intelligence is the aforementioned ability to understand and accurately handle others emotions as well as how you act in both cases. The times where we keep something in, or refrain from open expression when something comes up, is exactly when tension begins to build in our relationship. As soon as we discuss the issue we are met with the feeling of relief and the ability to move forth in the relationship. There are ways to avoid having to repress emotions in current relationships, a red flag that the relationship may not be worth pursuing (this makes sense being that many of our relationships are formed through fulfilling some need in the past that we feel we’re missing). Learning to control your own feelings is key in keeping your partner happy, do not expect them to always have a solution to your problem because that puts an unnatural pressure on anyway. A successful relationship only exists when both partners’ levels of maturity and emotional intelligence are close enough to equal to not tip a scale.

Something new that has developed in this relationship is the willingness to accept the other’s efforts of creativity in terms of rewarding the other partner as well as taking a genuine interest in the passions of the partner (regardless of prior experience on the subject). The text book goes into detail about how once you enter the reality stage of your relationship then you start to be impacted by troubles that arise such as money or jealousy. A great way to help get minds off of stress activators and help keep the love strong is to embrace these techniques that soak in our creative depths. In “Getting the Love You Want,” Dr. Hendrix mentions two exercises that magnify creativity as a source of joy in a relationship. The Surprise list finds ways to plan unplanned fun, come up with creative ways to have fun with your partner without letting them know in advance. This is a time where you can showcase your knowledge of your partner by coming up with activities you know they’ll enjoy without them having to suggest the activities themselves. The Fun List takes both partners making a list, and regardless of what’s on either list, tryout each item weekly. I think both ways are excellent options to discover new activities to enjoy together.

Being in a relationship has helped me progress into another level of thinking, one less selfish and in a way more selfish. In economics, a risk has to have positives that outweigh the negatives in order to be considered worth taking. When entering a relationship you take a risk, think about your happiness. My happiness by far surpasses any problem we’ve ever encountered. Think of the ways to increase happiness as told on pg. 70 of the Psych workbook: Don’t run after it (if you’re going to be happy, you won’t have to chase it), Positive attitude, let go of the past, and gratitude are the ones that stuck out most to me. I find that all of the suggestions seem simple, like old news in this relationship, that’s something that personally increases my happiness. No one can make a relationship perfect or perfect a relationship, but she makes me feel like I’ve accomplished both.

So I have a problem....lol, I mean...I'm perfect, a damn horse is a damn horse of course of course...but I like a certain thing more than most people, but I love something else more. Now....with that said, in business, which has examples for everything in life (the bible, art, and acid are the only other products to have said effects as well), says...with everything there is a trade off. What if, in moments of weakness, we go into cake and eat it too phase? I realized that, isn't this....exactly what inner strength really is? It is a counter balance, any level of weakness can be balanced if you find the right thing......that thing must respond in accordance to you, as you do to it though. I've had two conversations about style in the last few days, twice I had no idea what to say. I'm a stylish muhfucka. Yes. Fact. I grew up with a mother who didn't play that lol (minus 7th grade, rebel period...I didnt tie my shoes the whole year...member that? Girls still loved me though, shh.). Anyway, since then I've been thinking about style, that leads to YSL, the only fashion dude as well as the only gay male, who has had an influence on me. Don't front on Yves, dude was a G when he got older. He was humble, I think thats what I stole from him. I'm a dress clothes guy, I'd wear a suit everyday if I could. The first luxury item I bought with my own money was a pair of YSL slacks, charcoal grey...they...are still slightly too large for me lol...but I was proud nonetheless. I came across this tonight. The shy Yes is one of my secret weapons. He's acting. Yet he's not. Well played.
